Rape Cases in JK witnessing a gradual decline, down to 256 from 331 in 2014

Against 331 cases in 2014, figure in 2016 comes down to 256

Srinagar: Contrary to other states in India, the rape cases in Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing a decline with figures related to the heinous crime coming down with each passing year.

During the past one year, the total number of rape cases witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir was 256. The figure of the past year has witnessed the decline of 34 cases as in the year 2015; the rape cases recorded were 290 in one year.

The decline in the number of rapes in the state could be gauged by the fact that according to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), the number of such cases recorded in the year 2014 was 331 which declined to 290 in the year 2015 and in 2015 the number has drastically come down to 256.

Pertinently, the government this year announced that the four fast-track courts are coming up in Jammu and Kashmir to deal with rape cases and serving stern punishment to the guilty.

On August 3, this year, the finance minister Haseeb Darbu stated that these courts will go a long way in speedy disposal and delivering justice in cases of extreme violence against women.

Earlier, the High Court had asked the government to establish the fast track courts that could deal with the cases related to the violence against women in the state.
