List of people killed in Kashmir in 2017: 384 casualties reported, 8 youths shot dead in a single day

Srinagar: The year 2017 turned out one of the bloodiest year in Kashmir Valley. A total of 384 casualties were reported this year, while it were militants who topped the casualty list.

The data reveals that 207 militants including some top commanders from different militant outfits were killed this year. The ‘Operation All Out’ launched by Indian Combined Forces including Army, Para-military Central Reserve Police Force and counter insurgency unit of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Special Operation Group resulted in the maximum number of killing of militants particularly in South Kashmir, that is regarded as the hot bed of militancy.

It were not only the militants that felt the brunt this year, but Government Forces too suffered casualties. The data shows that 93 armed forces personnel also lost their lives during different militancy related operations. These include 52 Army soldiers, 33 Policemen, 05 CRPF personnel, 02 BSF men and one security man from Sahastra Seema Bal.

The year witnessed a surge in civilian killings. 81 civilians including 8 Amarnath Yatris were killed in different parts of Kashmir Valley. Besides three labourers working for General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) were also killed in a militant attack.

Militancy was not only the cause of casualties. Snow furry consumed over 26 Indian Army soldiers. They all were killed in different avalanches that struck in far flung areas particularly in North Kashmir.

Some of the top militant commanders who were killed this year included Abu Dujana, Jaish Chief Khalid Bhai, Sabzar Bhat, Bashir Lashkari, Junaid Matoo, Qayoom Najar, Noor Tral, Umar Khatab, Muzafar Ahmed Naiko alias Muza Molvi of Sopore, Abu Surag of Pakistan, Adil Ahmad Reshi of Bijbehara, Abid Ahmad Sheikh of Saktipora and Masood Ahmad Shah of Bewoora village, Abu Musaib, Qari Anas Abu Ali, Azaharuddin alias Ghazi Umar,Sajad Ahmed alias Babar, Mudasir Ahmad Tantray alias Asim, Wakeel Ahmad Thokar, Farooq Ahmad Bhat, Younus Lone, Mushtaq Ahmed, Muhammad Shafi Sherguri and Jahangir Ahmed Ganaie.

This year for the first time Army availed the services of Air Force Commandos during gun battles with militants. At least three Commandos were killed in two different gun fights in Hajin area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

The month of November proved deadly for militants. This month 28 militants were killed while in July the number of militant killing was 22. In August 21 remained the number followed by October when a total number of 17 militants were killed.

During the second month of the year 2017, at least 9 army soldiers were killed. Similarly, the month of April this year witnessed widespread protests resulting in the killing of several civilians.

On 9 April, eight youth were killed and 150 were wounded by Government Forces as large scale protests, clashes mar polling in Srinagar Parliamentary constituency

Some of the major incidents of the year were:

Jan 24: Three militants were killed in two separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Two non local militants Qari Anas and Abu Ali were killed in an encounter in Hadoora area of Shuhama in Ganderbal.

Jan 25: Snow avalanches in Sonmarg and Gurez kill at least fourteen Indian soldiers.

Jan 30: Five Indian soldiers who were rescued after they got buried under snow in Machill sector of Kupwara district died in Army hospital here. They were identified as Sepoy Dhavale Ganesh Kisan, Naik Mane Ramchandra Shamrao, Sepoy Ambore Balaji Bhagwanrao from Maharashtra, Grenadier Thamothara Kanan from Tamil Nadu and Signal man Parmar Deva Haza Bhai from Gujrat.

Feb 4: Two Hizb militants Ghazi Umar and Sajad Ahmed alias Babar were killed in a brief encounter in Amargarh Sopore in North Kashmir. Two SOG officers were also wounded in the encounter.

Feb 12: Four militants, two soldiers and two civilians were killed in a 10-hour-long fierce gunfight in Frisal village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The slain soldiers were identified as Lance Naik Bhandoriya Gopal Singh of Ahmadabad Gujarat and Sepoy Rughbeer Singh of Chamoli Uttrakhand. The injured soldiers included a Major-rank officer, PK Nigam and Rifleman, Shiraz Ahmaws. The militants who were killed were identified as Mudasir Ahmad Tantray alias Asim of Redwani Bala area in Qaimoh (affiliated with LeT); Wakeel Ahmad Thokar of Harigam Kulgam (also associated with LeT); Farooq Ahmad Bhat of Chak Dasand (affiliated with Hizb) and Younus Lone of Hawoora-Mishpora (affiliated with Hizb). Two civilians killed by government forces were identified as Aashiq Reshi, son of house owner Abdul Majid and 22-year-old Mushtaq Ahmad Itoo son of Muhamad Ibrahim of Hatigam village of Srigufwara area of Bijbehara in Anantnag district.

Feb 14: Three Army soldiers and a militant were killed in a fierce gun-battle in Hajin area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Eleven persons including five army men – one of them a Major – one CRPF officer, 4 policemen and a civilian were injured during the gun-battle. The slain soldiers were identified as Sepoy Ravi Kumar of 31 RR, Dharmendra Kumar of 31 RR and Ashutosh Kumar of 13 RR.

In a separate incident three militants and an Army Major were killed in a gunfight at Kralgund Handwara in north Kashmir. LeT slain militants could not be identified while the slain Army man was identified as Major Satish Dhaiya of 30 RR.

Feb 23: In an audacious attack, armed militants ambushed a Cordon and Search Operation Party killing 3 soldiers of 44 RR and wounding five others in Mulu Chitragam area of Shopian district. An elderly woman Taja Begum according to police was also killed in the cross firing. The army personnel killed in the attack were identified as Sreejit MJ, Vikas Kumar and Ghulam Muhammad Rather, while the injured include Lt Col Mukesh Jha, Major Amardeep Singh, Surendra Kumar, Sumer Singh and Ajay Pal.

Militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen claimed the responsibility of the attack.

March 4: Two militants and an SOG man Manzoor Ahmed of Dachna Salamabad Uri were killed and three troopers including a Major were wounded in an encounter at Haffo Nazneenpora area of Tral town in South Kashmir. One of the slain militant was a Pakistani national while other was identified as Aqib Ahmed Bhat alias Molive alias Zeeshan of Nazneenpora Tral.

March 15: Three militants and a 6 year old girl Kaneeza were killed in an encounter at Kalaroos Kupwara. A little boy Faisal Ahmed was wounded after he received a ‘stray’ bullet.

March 26: Two Hizbul-Mujahideen militants Shahbaz Ahmed Wani alias Rayees alias Kachoor of Belo village in Rajpora, Pulwama and Farooq Ahmed Hura of Nazneenpora village in Shopian were killed in a brief gunfight in Padgampora village in Awantipora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district leading to protests and clashes.

March 28: A militant Touseef Ahmed was killed in Durbugh Chadoora area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. Government Forces shot dead three civilians who were protesting near encounter site. They were identified as Zahid Rashid (24) of Chadoora, Amir Fayaz Waza (18) of Wathoora and Ishfaq Ahmed Wani (24) of Rangreth. Over 35 protesters were either hit by pellets or bullets during the clashes.

April 6: 3 Soldiers were killed in avalanche in Batalik Sector of Kargil district.

April 9: Eight youth were killed and 150 were wounded by Government Forces as large scale protests, clashes mar polling in Srinagar Parliamentary constituency. The slain youth were identified as Faizan Fayaz Dar (15), Abass Jahangir (22) of Dalwan Pakharpora, Shabir Ahmed Bhat (22) of Dawlatpora Chadoora, Nisar Ahmed Mir (25) of Ratsun Beerwah, Akeel Ahmed Wani (22) of Churmujroo Beerwah, Adil Farooq Sheikh (19) of Yarigund Kawoosa Khalisa, Amir Ahmed Rather (20) of Dadwanpora Chadoora and Omar Farooq Ganie (21) of Barsoo Ganderbal.

April 16: Infamous government gunman Abdul Rashid Billa was shot dead by militants at Hajin. A Public Prosecutor and NC worker Imtiyaz Ahmed Khan was shot dead in Pinjora Shopian.

April 24: PDP District President Advocate Abdul Gani Dar was shot dead by suspected militants in Pinglan village of Pulwama district.

April 27: Three army soldiers including a Captain and two militants were killed in Panzgam Kupwara gunfight. A civilian Muhammad Yousuf was also shot dead by army during post gunfight protest.

May 1: In a deadly attack, five policemen and two bank employees were killed in Pombai village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The two bank security guards were identified as Muzaffar Ahmed Laway son of Muhammad Ayoub of Lagroo Kulgam and Javaid Ahmed Bhat son of Abdul Majid of Wesbatapora Kulgam while the slain cops were identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Hajam son of Abdul Ahad of Batpora Zakoora Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmed Bhat son of Gul Muhammad of YK Pora Qazigund, ASI Bashir Ahmed Dar son of Abdul Gani of Bonigam Qazigund, Muhammad Qasim Khan son of Bashir Ahmed of Awoora Manwan Thregam, Kupwara, Farooq Ahmed son of Abdul Aziz of Nehama Lakhadipora Kulgam.

May 6: Six people including a militant, four civilians and a policeman were killed in a shootout at Mirbazar area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

May 10: A Kashmiri army officer of Kulgam Umar Fayaz was abducted and killed by unidentified gunmen.

May 21: Four militants and three army men were killed in two day gun fight in Nowgam Sector of Kupwara district.

May 26: At least six suspected militants were killed in Kashmir’s Baramulla area after the Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Rampur sector.

May 27: Hizb commander Sabzar Ahmed Bhat and his associate Faizan Muzaffar were killed in a gun fight at Rathsuna village of Tral, sparking Valley wide shutdown and protests. During the clashes scores were wounded while a civilian Molvi Aqib Ahmed of Kunjabal Tral died after Army fired upon protesters near the encounter site.

June 1: Two local militants killed in Nithipora area of Sopore town in an encounter. They were identified as Basharat Sheikh of Bomai and Ajaz Ahmed Mir of Brat Kalan Sopore.

June 5: Government Forces claimed that it gunned down four non-local unidentified militants in Sumbal area of Bandipora district.

June 8: During 24 hours 7 militants were killed when Army foiled infiltration bids in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. One soldier was also killed during the gunfight.

June 9: Army claimed that it killed 6 militants who were trying to cross this part of Kashmir in Uri Sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

June 15: Two policemen and a civilian were killed in three separate incidents. Militants shot dead a policeman Shabir Ahmed at Bogund Kulgam while another cop was killed in Hyderpora attack. A civilian Naseer Ahmed of Bandipora was killed in Forces firing at Reghreth Srinagar.

June 16: Six policemen were killed in Achabal attack. Three militants were killed in Arwani Bijbehara encounter while two civilians were shot dead during clashes near encounter site. Two civilians Muhammad Ashraf Khar and Ahsan Dar were killed by government forces after the protests that broke out after the encounter.

June 19: A Janta Dal United worker Ajaz Ahmed was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Pinglina Pulwama.

June 21: Two local militants Gulzar Ahmed and Basit Ahmed were killed in Pazalpora Sopore encounter.

Three local militants were killed in Kakapora Pulwama in the encounter. The slain militants were identified as Shariq and Majid of Kakapora and Irshad Ahmed of Padgampora area of Awantipora in the Pulwama district.

June 22: A civilian Touseef Ahmed was killed in Kakpora clashes. He was resident of Tengpuna Pulwama.

Two army soldiers killed in Poonch in BAT action from Pakistan. An intruder was killed in Keran sector after he tried to infiltrator into this part of Kashmir.

A police officer Ayub Pandith was beaten to death in Nowhatta Srinagar after he fired upon a group of people with his pistol and wounded three persons.

July 3: Three militants were killed in an encounter at Bahmino village of Pulwama district.

July 10: Eight Yatris were killed in a militant attack in Anantnag.

July 11: Three militants Javid Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Saadpora Churpora Narbal, Sajad Ahmad Gilkar of Nowhatta Srinagar and Aaquib Gul of Goripora Hyderpora were killed in Rudgugh Beerwah area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

July 12: Two Indian army men Lance Naik Ranjit Singh and Rifleman Satish Bhagat were killed in snipper firing from Pakistan along Line of Control in Kupwara district.

July 17: A soldier Mudasir Ahmed and a child was killed in Poonch after India Pakistan trade fire along Line of Control.

Three militants were killed in Brakpora Anantnag. They were identified Showket Lohar, a resident of Arwani; Muzaffar Hajam, a resident of Danvethpora, Kokernag and Naseer Ahmad, resident of Hakhoora Badasgam presently settled at Pehru village.

July 19: Junior Commissioned Officer Shashi Kumar who was injured in Pak firing in Nowshera Sector in Jammu succumbed to his injuries.

July 21: An army man Rifleman Jayadrath Singh of Raj Rifles was killed in Pakistan firing in Sunderbani Sector in Jammu.

A youth Tanvir Ahmed was killed in Army firing in Beerwah Budgam.

July 26: An SOG man Gowhar Tantray of Kujar was shot dead by militants in Yaripora Kulgam.

July 27: Army gunned down three militants when they trying to infiltrate into this part of Kashmir in Gurez Valley of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

July 30: Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in Tahab village of Pulwama district by government forces in an encounter while dozens of youth were injured in massive clashes between government forces and youth following the killing of the militants. They were identified as Shariq Ahmed Sheikh alias Harris resident of Gulzarpora Takuna and Shabir Ahmad Mir resident of Mihind Bijbehara, Anantnag.

July 31: Army claimed that it killed a militant in Uri Sector of Baramulla district.

Aug 1: Two militants Abu Dujana and Arif Lelhari were killed in an counter at Hakripora Kakapora area of Pulwama district. Post encounter clashes leave two civilians dead. They were identified as Firdous Ahmed of Begumgagh and Aqeel Ahmed of Gabarpora.

Aug 3: Two soldiers including Major Kamlesh Pandey were killed after militants attacked a patrol at Zaipora Shopian.

Two militants Suhail Ahmed and Aqib Ahmed were killed in an ambush at Gopalpora Kulgam.

Aug 9: Three militants Zahid Ahmed Bhat from Nawdal Tral, Ishfaq Ahmed from Batgund Tral and Muhammad Ashraf Dar from Trich Pulwama were killed in a gunfight at Gulab Bagh Tral while a civilian Muhammad Younis of Saimou Tral was killed in Government Forces firing.

Aug 12: A woman and a Junior Commissioned army officer were killed in cross border firing in Poonch along Line of Control.

Aug 13: Three Hizb militants and two soldiers were killed in a gunfight at Awneera Shopian. Two civilians were killed in Kakapra Pulwama and Zainpora Shopian.

Aug 16: A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Ayoub Lelhari was killed in an ambush at Bandarpora Pulwama village.

Aug 20: A cable operator Hilal Ahmed from Shopian was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

Aug 25: Three militants and 8 security personnel including four cops and four CRPM men were killed in DPL Pulwama gunfight.

Aug 28: An Assistant Sub Inspector of Jammu and Kashmir Police Abdul Rasheed Pir was shot dead by suspected militants near Mehandi Kadal Anantnag.

Sep 14: LeT Chief Abu Ismayil and his associate Chota Qasim were killed in a gun fight at Aarigam in the outskirts of Srinagar city.

Sep 21: Two civilians Pinky Kour and Ghulam Nabi Trag were killed and over 30 injured in a grenade blast in Tral town of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Sep 24: Three militants were killed while four civilians and a soldier were injured in a gunfight at Uri Baramulla.

Sep 26: Army said it killed an infiltrator in Uri sector while top Hizb commander Qayoom Najar was also killed in the same sector during a gun fight.

Sep 27: Suspected militants killed a BSF man Rameez Ahmed Parray who was on vacations inside his house and injured his three other family members in Parrey Mohalla area of Hajin in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

Oct 2: Five militants were killed in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara and Rampura sector of Baramulla.

Three civilians were killed in Pakistan firing in Poonch Sector.

A police constable Ashiq Ahmed was shot dead by militants in Padgampor Awantipora.

Oct 3: Three militants and a BSF man were killed in a Fidayeen attack at Humhama.

A soldier was killed in Pakistan sniffer firing in Poonch sector.

The dead body of a man Showkat Ahmed Dar abducted five days ago was found in Vesu Qazigund.

Unidentified gunmen shot a former panch Ghulam Rasool Ganai affiliated with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Mattan area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Oct 6: A former militant Rafiq Ahmed Bhat alias Dada was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Tral market in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Oct 9: A soldier Raj Kumar from 53 Rashtriya Rifles was killed when militants reportedly fired upon a search party in Drang area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Operational chief of Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit Khalid was killed in a gunfight with forces in Ladoora village of Rafiabad in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Three militants Asif Ahmad of Kathowhalan, Zahid Ahmad Mir of Ganapora and Irfan Malla of Heef Shirmal Shopian.were killed in a gunfight with government forces in Shopian district.

Oct 12: Two militants Abu Bakr alias Ali Baba and Nasrullah Mir, son of Nazir Ahmad Mir, resident of Mir Mohalla Hajin and two air force commandos .
Cpl Neelesh Nayan and Sgt Milind Khabar were killed in Hajin Bandipora encounter.

Oct 14: Two militants including LeT district commander Shopian Wasim Shah and his associate Nasir Mir were killed in Litar Pulwama encounter. A civilian Gulzar Ahmed was killed during post encounter clashes.

A cop Khurshid Ahmed was killed after militants attacked a police vehicle at Nandmarg Kulgam in South Kashmir.

Oct 16: Suspected militants shot dead a PDP Sarpanch Muhammad Ramzan at Imam Sahib Shopian. A militant was also killed in mysterious circumstances.

Nov 4: A Policeman Abdul Salam was killed when suspected militants attacked a police party outside Rajpora police station in Pulwama.

Nov 6: Three militants including the nephew of Azhar Masood and an army soldier were killed in Kandi Aglar area of Pulwama district.

Nov 13: Two Hizb militants Ashiq Ahmed of Palhalan and Taib Majid of Brat Kalan Sopore were killed in Zachildara Handwara.

Nov 17: A militant Mugees Mir and a Sub Inspector Imran Tak were killed in a brief shootout at Zakura area of Srinagar city.

Nov 18: Six LeT militants and an Indian Air Force commando were killed in a fierce encounter at Chandergeer Hajin area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

Nov 20: A Hizb militant Adil Chopan was killed in Gulshanpora Gojarbasti in Tral town of Pulwama district.

Nov 30: At least four militants including Shabir Ahmed a local militant were killed in Futlipora Pakharpora encounter.

Dec 4: Three militants including a local militant Yawar Mir and a soldier were killed in a gunfight at Bonigam-Bhadragund on Srinagar Jammu highway in Qazigund.

Dec 11: Three militants and a woman were killed in a gunfight in Unsoo Handwara.

Dec 12: Unknown gunmen killed two bank security guards Tariq Ahmed and Fayaz Ahmed at Kralchek Shopian.

Dec 18: Army killed a civilian Taxi Driver Asif Iqbal in Thandipora Kupwara during an ambush while police termed the killing as ‘mistaken identity’.

Dec 19: Two militants and a woman Rubeena Jan were killed in an encounter at Batmuran Shopian. One of the militant was identified as Tanvir Ahmed of Batmuran Shopian.

Dec 23: Four soldiers including a Major were killed in cross border firing at Brat Galla Sector of Rajouri distirct in Jammu and Kashmir.
