Over 21,400 hectares of land in JK under illegal occupation of security forces: Mehbooba

Jammu: Mehbooba Mufti, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday informed that State Legislative Assembly that over 21,400 hectares of land is under the illegal occupation of the security forces in the state.

In a written reply, Mehbooba also informed that over 18,846 hectares are under ‘authorized occupation’ of the forces in Kashmir including Ladakh.

In Jammu, over 2,555 hectares of land are under unauthorised occupation of the Army, the CM said in the written reply.

The chief minister maintained that this was in addition to thousands of hectares of state, acquired, requisitioned, leased and hired land under the illegal occupation of Army and other security forces in the state.

The chief minister shared in the information in the house after National Conference legislator Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar sought the district wise details of the land under forces’ occupation.

Over 12,940 hectares of land are under illegal occupation of Army and other forces in Ladakh, followed by 5,906 hectares in the valley and 2,555 hectares in Jammu division.

In the reply, Mehbooba said that Kishtwar is the only district where Army and other forces’ don’t hold any unauthorized land.

The chief minister said Leh district of Ladakh was leading the table with over 7,197 hectares of land under the unauthorised occupation of Army and other security forces, followed by Kargil (5,742.9 hectares).

Districts of Bandipora and Baramulla together accounted for 3,403.8 hectares of land under the unauthorised occupation of security forces, she said.

In Kashmir division, Shopian district accounted for 31.3 hectares of land under unauthorised occupation of forces, lowest in the division, the chief minister informed.
