Electoral college backs her candidature; says she carries the pain of people who have sacrificed much but received little in return
Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti was unanimously re-elected as the party president for a fifth consecutive term on Thursday, with members of the electoral college extending their unanimous support to her candidature.
Reacting to her re-election, Mehbooba said people who have endured years of suffering need compassion and healing rather than political triumphs.
“Those who are hurting do not need victories. They need healing,” she said in a social media post, expressing gratitude to party members for reposing their trust in her once again.
She said the renewed mandate carried a deep sense of responsibility, adding that she remained mindful of the hardships faced by people who had made immense sacrifices but whose concerns had often gone unheard.
The resolution proposing her re-election was moved by senior party leader and former minister Abdul Rehman Veeri, while senior leader Mohammad Khurshid Alam seconded the proposal.
According to the PDP, all electoral college members present at the meeting voted in favour of Mehbooba’s candidature. Party members from Jammu also participated virtually and conveyed their support.
Recalling the pain and loss experienced by families across the region, Mehbooba spoke about mothers who continued to wait for sons who never returned and fathers who had endured the loss of several family members without receiving answers.
She also highlighted the uncertainty confronting the younger generation, saying their concerns about whether the future would bring any change from the hardships of the past remained deeply troubling.
Mehbooba said the PDP was established with the objective of representing people’s suffering and addressing their concerns, so that families would not have to spend their lives seeking answers.
Mehbooba has been at the helm of the PDP since 2003.
