Srinagar: Mobile Internet services have been suspended in Kashmir on the eve of the Indian Republic day celebrations.
The authorities have justified the move by saying that it has been done to “prevent any untoward incident” during the official January 26 functions.
An official said that the service was suspended “as a precautionary measure”.
He said that the service was shut around 7:30 pm across Kashmir valley. “Voice calling on mobile devices is likely to be blocked tomorrow morning to prevent militants from detonating any explosive devices,” he said.
Broadband connections and internet via cables, hasn’t been blocked as this report was done. Although cellular mobile network is likely to remain censored till mid-day January 26.
The main Republic day function is being held at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar. All roads leading to the venue have been blocked with concertina wires and barricades.
