Lakhs of shops in Delhi stayed today shut today in protest against the ongoing sealing drive as traders gathered at the iconic Ramlila Maidan to hold a mega rally, asking the government to save their businesses.

Today’s rally is the third in many months against the sealing drive. According to reports, more than 7 lakh shops in over 3,000 markets are closed today.

Sadar Bazar, Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Chawri Bazar were amongst the prominent markets that wore a deserted look, reported the Financial Express.

Nearly 10,000 traders’ organisations are taking part in a mega rally at Ramlila Maidan. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has called the rally wherein families of traders as well as workers’ association are participating..

Praveen Khandelwal, secretary-general of CAIT, said that “thousands of traders” are participating in today’s protest.

“We want the Delhi government to pass a bill in the current Assembly session for a moratorium on sealing and forward the same to the Centre for its approval,” Khandelwal told the Hindustan Times.

The Delhi sealing drive is being carried out by a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee. The drive was then implemented by the three BJP-led municipal corporations. The building department of the municipal corporations started the sealing drive against Delhi traders who have not paid the “conversion charges” as per the Delhi Master Plan 2021.
