Article 370 is being ‘temporarily held back’, we will finally abrogate it: BJP

Srinagar: A day after Minister of State for Home said that there was no plan to abrogate the Article 370, the State BJP General Secretary Ashok Kaul has said that the Article is being held back ‘temporarily in the larger interest.’

While speaking to Greater Kashmir, Kaul said, “We will finally abrogate it. The statement by the minister in parliament is for the time being only and for the larger interest. Abrogation of Article 370 is one of the basic goals of our party.”

The party said that the Article 370 was responsible for keeping “the settled issue of Jammu and Kashmir alive” and encouraging the separatists and external forces to interfere in the internal matters of India and challenge the integrity of the country.

Koul said that the BJP is very clear on the issue from the day one. Article 370, he said, was increasing the alienation of the people of the Valley and taking them away from the national mainstream

On Tuesday while  replying to a written question by BJP MP Ashwini Kumar, who asked whether the government was committed to scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution.

“There is currently no such proposal under consideration of the government,” Ahir said.

The BJP’s election manifesto of 2014 reiterated its stand on Article 370 and promised to discuss this with all stakeholders and to remain committed to the abrogation of Article 370.

It was one of the core and contentious issues along with the Uniform Civil Code and building of the Ram Mandir.
