Kulgam civilian killings: Joint Resistance calls for shutdown, protests on Thursday

Srinagar: The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) on Wednesday called for a shutdown on Thursday against the against the civilian killings Kulgam district where three civilians were killed near the gun fight site in Khudwani area.

Addressing a presser in Srinagar, the JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Miwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik appealed for a shutdown and protests on Thursday. They also asked people to hold protests tomorrow against the Kulgam killings.

Three civilians have been killed in clashes which erupted near the gun fight site in Kulgam. More than 50 people have been injured. An Army man has also been killed during the gun fight.

To fight the trapped militants, the army has used helicopter gun ships. 

The civilian deaths occur just two days after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met the Prime Minister and Defence Minister of India. In her meeting with Narendra Modi, she had appealed for finding ways to end the bloodshed and alienation in the valley.

During her meeting with Nirmala Sitharaman, Mehbooba had called for a ‘humane approach and avoiding collateral damage during security operations’.
