Srinagar: Fearing protests in wake of the call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership against the killings in Kulgam, authorities barred the congregational Friday prayers in the historic Jamia Masjid.
Restrictions were imposed in the Nowhatta area of the Downtown and adjacent areas. Forces were deployed in strength in the area to prevent any protests.
Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who delivers sermon every Friday at the mosque, has been placed under house detention.
While taking to twitter, Mirwaiz said that the people won’t be allowed to offer Friday prayers even on the auspicious day of Shab-e-Miraj.
