Policeman dies in Wadwan militant attack, youth injured in clashes with forces

A policeman died after militants attacked a guard post in the Wadwan area of Budgam district on Friday. Following the attack, clashes erupted in the adjoining village of Soibugh when youth pelted stones on army vehicles moving towards Wadwan. The army opened fire to chase away the protesters in which one youth sustained a bullet injury in his thigh.

The youth has been identified as Adil Farooq Mir son of Farooq Mir resident of Galwanpora, Budgam. He was referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment.

An official said that the militants attacked a guard post at Wadwan in Soibugh area Friday afternoon. A policeman who was critically injured in the attack succumbed at a hospital, he said.

The spokesman said that the police “successfully thwarted” the weapon-snatching attempt in Wadwan.

“Militants today attempted to force their entry inside a Guard post at Budgam. Militants appeared outside the Guard Post in Wadwan Budgam and held-up SgCt Shamim Ahmad outside his Guard Post who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a local mosque in the vicinity,” he said.

“Shamim was asked to lead toward the Guard Post however he raised an alarm and the alert jawans inside the Guard Post successfully foiled it,” he said.
