Will accept United Nations Commission of Inquiry if India accepts it, says Pakistan

Posted on

On Thursday, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Dr. Muhammad Faisal at the weekly media briefing said that Pakistan would receive the United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Pakistan-administered Kashmir if the Government of India would agree to the COI’s visit, reported PTI.

The spokesperson encouraged GoI to accept the visit, saying, “India can address its claims of the (OHCHR) report being based on unverified information by allowing the COI and OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission access to held Kashmir.”

He said that the isolation of India within the international community was ‘complete’ and that “the skeletons in Indian closet are growing in numbers and size.”

“The Indian government should hold an independent, transparent and credible probe into the assassination of Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari,” he stated during the briefing.

He also said that his murder was a “manifestation of Indian state terrorism and reflection of intolerance of Indian state apparatus which wants to stifle freedom of speech and expression”. He praised him in the briefing, saying that he was a consistent voice against human rights abuses and a stringent advocate for peaceful resolution in the conflict-stricken state.

“The Indian government remains fearful of international exposition of the brutalization of occupied Jammu & Kashmir. India can run, but can it hide? This remains to be seen. The ongoing bloodshed in held Kashmir along with Indian statements about the crackdown in the valley shows an alarming Indian imperviousness to international opinion,” he said. He expressed his concern regarding the recent imposition of governor’s rule in the state.

The spokesperson stated his concern over the imposition of governor’s rule in Kashmir.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had earlier called for a Commission of Inquiry to be set up for investigating human rights abuses in Kashmir. It followed the first ever report on Kashmir by the UN on the violation and impunity of rights in Indian administered Kashmir and legislative and constitutional issues in Pakistan administered Kashmir.
