BJP pushing to break precedence, install Hindu CM in JK: Reports

Amid growing political suspense over the change in guard in Kashmir Valley, the media reports from New Delhi are proposing two names for the next probable chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir: Sajjad Lone or a Hindu face.

If reports are to be believed, then the Bharatiya Janata Party in touch with dissenting PDP MLAs is pitching for a Hindu Chief Minister in the state.

If that happens, then J&K will have its first Hindu CM.

“BJP’s J-K leadership has conveyed to its cadre that they will form an alliance, only if its Hindu CM pitch is agreed upon,” Republic TV reported. “As per sources, 14 PDP MLAs have expressed dissent from Mehbooba Mufti’s leadership and are ready to change sides.”

According to the channel, BJP has conveyed categorically to the dissenting PDP ministers that they will have to have a different party and then support a ‘Hindu’ face for the CM position.

In another report, however, Sajjad Lone has been named as a front-runner for the Chief Ministerial race in Jammu-Kashmir.

Earlier, the MLA Handwara and Peoples Conference chief, Lone met with former Jammu-Kashmir Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu at a top hotel in New Delhi and fuelled the speculations.

“Republic TV has learnt from sources that Sajjad Lone is a front-runner for the Chief Ministerial race in Jammu-Kashmir as a consensus candidate between the BJP and dissenting PDP MLAs,” the report said. “Both the leaders are understood to have discussed the political fallout of the revolt within PDP camp and it’s impact on the political landscape of the state.”

A political suspense gripped the Valley after Mehbooba Mufti-led government collapsed on June 19, as the BJP withdrew its support. Governor’s rule has since been imposed in the state.
