SC seeks reply from GoI, WhatsApp after plea alleging no compliance on local Indian laws
The Supreme Court of India issued a notice to the government of India and messaging app WhatsApp on Monday after a plea, filed by Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change, alleged that the latter did not comply with the provision of appointing a grievance officer and other laws of India.
The plea was heard by a bench of Justices R F Nariman and Indu Malhotra, which asked the bench to restrain WhatsApp from proceeding with its payment systems unless it fully complies with provisions of the Reserve Bank of India.
The apex court has sought a reply from both parties within four weeks.
Separately, the Supreme Court on Friday will hear a bunch of petitions challenging the Article 35-A, which bars outsiders from buying immovable property in the state.
According to the cause list released by the apex court registry, the case will be heard by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra on August 31. The case figures at serial number 18 among the cases listed on Friday.
The Resistance Leaders have called for shutdown in the state on August 30 and 31 to protest the petitions calling for scrapping the article.
Meanwhile, earlier during Monday, The Supreme Court adjourned a fresh petition which challenged Article 35-A after an adjournment request was placed by the petitioner, Ashwani Upadhyay, a BJP leader and lawyer.
