Fake News: Counterfeit pages of news organisations spreading unverified news in Kashmir

Srinagar: In the past few months, many news organisations have called out fake pages that are being run in Kashmir in their name. With more and more fake pages of news organisations in Kashmir mushrooming across the region, rumours and unverified news have a high potential of creating serious damage in the politically sensitive place.

On Friday, English Daily Greater Kashmir issued a disclaimer saying, “a page by the name of ‘Greater the Kashmir’ has misused the Greater Kashmir logo and posted fake messages about some abductions.Greater Kashmir completely denies any links with a fake Facebook page and the messages it is circulating.”

Many of these pages have been posting hate speech, insensitive posts, unverified and fake news, all in the name of reputed news organisation.

Another page, that goes by the name of ‘Kashmir & Life’ has misused the logo of reputed English Weekly Kashmir Life. The page has regularly been posting unverified news items.

Greater Kashmir’s online editor said, “We want our readers to follow and like only our official Facebook account which has a ‘tick’ mark indicating authentication from Facebook. The matter has already been reported to Facebook.”

“We are lodging a complaint with the police,” he added.

A fake page of Free Press Kashmir is also created and has been posting unverified and fake news.

You can click on the link and mark it as spam. Facebook will block the account if more and more people mark it as spam.
