US warns Iran it ‘will respond swiftly, decisively’ to attacks by allies in Iraq

The United States warned Iran that it will “respond swiftly and decisively” to Tehran’s attacks by allies in Iraq if resulted in injury to its citizens or damage to its facilities, Reuters reported.

The White House press secretary, in the statement, blamed Iran of not preventing attacks in recent days on the US Consulate in Basra and the American Embassy compound in Baghdad.

“Iran did not act to stop these attacks by its proxies in Iraq, which it has supported with funding, training, and weapons,” the statement said.

“The United States will hold the regime in Tehran accountable for any attack that results in injury to our personnel or damage to United States Government facilities. America will respond swiftly and decisively in defence of American lives,” the statement said.

Earlier on Friday, three mortar bombs targeted Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, in which the US Embassy resides. No casualties or damage were reported as per the Iraqi military.

The Green Zone includes parliament, government buildings and many foreign embassies. Near the airport, the U.S Consulate in Basra was attacked by rockets on Saturday.

Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani claimed in a broadcast on state media that the U.S sent messages ‘everyday’ for re-negotiations.

“From one side they try to pressure the people of Iran, on another side they send us messages every day through various methods that we should come and negotiate together,” Rouhani said.
