The newly appointed acting Director General of Police Dilbag Singh will continue to be in office, the Supreme Court of India said on Thursday.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra said acting DGP Dilbag Singh, who replaced S P Vaid, shall continue to operate and asked the UPSC to take a decision within four weeks on suitability of senior police officers who can be appointed as police chief in the state.
As per the apex court’s verdict, the state government has to give a list of senior police officers to UPSC to check their suitability and shortlist three names from the list.
Dilbag Singh took over as the Director General of Police Jammu and Kashmir on September 7. He succeeded Dr. S.P Vaid who passed on the baton to Dilbag Singh after later was transferred.
The Supreme Court had earlier on September 11 sought the Attorney General’s assistance on a plea by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, seeking sanction for its decision to appoint Dilbagh Singh as acting DGP.
