Husband, in-laws booked for ‘abetment to suicide’ in Bandipora nurse’s death

Srinagar: Four persons have been booked by the police for abetment of suicide and subjecting a woman to cruelty in Ahamsharief village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, an official said today, as per a report by Greater Kashmir.

The official, cited by GK, said that they have booked four relatives including husband of the woman, Rehana Gulzar (31) who had died of burn injuries sustained at her in-laws’ home on October 7.

Gulzar, mother-of-three, had sustained serious burn injuries at her in-laws’ home in Ahamsharief village on October 6 and subsequently died in a Srinagar hospital on October 7.

She was working as FHPHW in Bandipora health department. The relatives and colleagues of Rehana had alleged that she was burnt alive by her in-laws at their home while the latter claimed she committed suicide.

Police had lodged a first information report (FIR) in the case and later constituted a special investigation team (SIT) headed by Dy.SP Headquarter Bandipora on October 10 after relatives and colleagues of Rehana held protests, demanding justice.

The police official said that her four relatives have been booked under section 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Ranbir Panel Code.

Those arrested include the husband of the deceased, her mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

“They have been booked under FIR No. 140/2018 under section 498-A and 306 RPC. They all are under police custody,” the official said.

He said that further investigation in the case is going on.
