Kulgam gunfight: Armed forces had called family of militant Zeenat-ul-Islam to ask him to surrender

Srinagar: The Indian Army on Saturday contacted the family of militant commander Zeenat-ul-Islam asking them to pursue their son to surrender. Zeenat-ul-Islam is believed to have been killed in the gunfight.

The father of Zeenat-ul-Islam said that army from the local camp contacted and asked him to persuade his son to surrender.

Considered as an Improvised explosive device (IED) expert, Zeenat ul Islam of Shopian’s volatile Sugan area had joined militant ranks in 2015. He was now commander of Al Badr outfit.

A key recruiters Zeenat is one of three militants surviving from Army’s most list of 12 most wanted militants. Zakir Musa is number one.

Two militants were killed in a fierce gunfight in Katapora village of Yaripora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

Greater Kashmir had reported that the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained, and that two more militants ‘might have escaped’ from the spot.

Intense clashes had erupted near the gunfight site in Yaripora area of Kulgam district on Saturday.

Reports said that youth took to streets and pelted forces with stones near the site of a gunfight. Forces responded by firing tear gas shells, triggering further clashes.

The gunfight had broken out between militants and the armed forces in Katpora village of Yaripora in Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Reports said that a joint team of army’s 50RR, CRPF, and SOG cordoned off the area after having inputs regarding the presence of some militants.

Reports said that while the forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon triggering a gunfight.

Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the area.
