The ‘landmark decision for women empowerment’ had earned applauds

Srinagar: Government of Jammu and Kashmir headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik, has revoked the order of Mehbooba Mufti’s government that abolished stamp duty on the sale of properties owned by women in Kashmir.

The order issued by the Principal Secretary to the government ‘in public interest’ says, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of section 9 of the Stamp Act Svt. 1977, and in super-session of all previous notifications, issued on the subject, the Government being satisfied that it is necessary to do so in public interest hereby direct the clauses (a) and (b) of the Article 18 under Schedule-I of the Act shall be substituted by the following…”

Calling the development a very unfortunate step, youth president and Spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Waheed Para in a tweet said that it would ‘disempower the agency of women’ in Jammu and Kashmir.

In May last year, Mehbooba Mufti’s government had abolished stamp duty on the properties being registered in the name of female members of the family.

The particular step had earned applauds and was also labeled as ‘landmark decision for women empowerment’.
