Srinagar: Kashmir valley observed a shutdown to mark the the sixth death anniversary of Afzal Guru, who was hanged on this day in Tihar jail in 2013 for his involvement in the Parliament attack case.
The Joint Resistance Leadership had called for a shutdown and reiterated that Guru’s mortal remains should be handed over to his family.
All business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads in Srinagar. Authorities made heavy deployments of police and paramilitary forces at law and order sensitive places in Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla.

Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Friday.
In a tweet he said:
As Martyrdom anniversaries of #ShaheedAfzalGuru and #ShaheedMaqboolBhat are being observed on 9th and 11 feb authorities have started crackdown on resistance leaders and activists, I have been just put placed under #HouseArrest

In another tweet, Mirwaiz said:
