Article 35-A row: Two day shutdown begins across Kashmir

The two day shutdown called by the Joint Resistance Leadership against the tinkering of Article 35-A began across the Kashmir Valley.

All shops and business establishments remained closed while thin movement of traffic was witnessed across the valley.

The JRL had urged the people observe shutdown on Feb 13, 14 to protest and resist any move to change demographic nature of Jammu and Kashmir by scrapping hereditary state subject law guaranteed under Article 35-A of Indian Constitution.

In a statement, JRL had said that late announcement and ambiguity over the dates of hearing of 35-A and 370 by Supreme Court on 13 or 14 of February is “worrisome, and indicates of mischief.”

Article 35-A, which was incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of J&K. Several interlocutory petitions have also been filed in support and against of Article 35-A by various individuals and civil society groups.
