Jamaat ban: Future of 300 schools, over one lakh students at stake

Srinagar: The parents whose wards are enrolled in the schools run by Falah-e-Aam Trust Jammu and Kashmir are worried about the future of their wards as the authorities have reportedly issued notices to various schools, asking them to stop the educational activities forthwith.

The development comes after the Government of India banned Jamaat-e-Islami for its alleged links within militants.

On Friday, a school in Bandipora Ajas was sealed by the authorities but was unsealed after the intervention of Tehsildar of the area.

According to reports, at least 300 schools are being run by FAT having 10 thousand teachers with an approx enrollment of one lakh students.

They said most of the students are orphans, belonging to poor and downtrodden families. They said FAT is imparting education without caste, colour and creed.

Sources said that authorities at several schools including Ajas Bandipora, Manigam Ganderbal and Baramulla have been given notices, asking them to shut educational activities forthwith.

The uncertainty over the closure of schools has put the career and future of students, teachers and others working in the schools at stake, besides causing anxiety among the parents of those whose wards are enrolled in these schools.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Falah-e-Aam Trust Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Maqbool said “We have no direct relation with Jamaat-e-Islami as FAT is solely confined in imparting education.”

He said Jamaat is a political organization and those who have some kind of grudge with it should deal with them politically.

He confirmed that notices were sent to school authorities at various places. “At least 18 among 300 schools are directly controlled by FAT and rest are administered by local committees,” he said.

He said FAT will knock the doors of Court to seek continuation of smooth conduct of educational activities so that the future of students and career of teachers and other office bearers is not ruined.

On Saturday, PDP held a protest against the ban lead by their President Mehbooba Mufti. She once again reiterated that ‘an idea cannot be jailed but it can be fought with a better idea.’

Jama’at-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir has termed the imposition of ban on the party as ‘unconstitutional, undemocratic and unethical’.

According to a statement Jamaat said, “The ban imposed by Indian Ministry of Home Affairs on JeI is unconstitutional, undemocratic and unethical. The allegations leveled against the Jama’at are concocted and
baseless.”

It further added, “Jama’at will move to court and in this regards deliberations are going on with legal experts.”

Earlier, the Government of India said that Jamaat-e-Islami (JK) is responsible for the formation of Hizbul Mujahidden, which is the biggest militant organization active in Jammu and Kashmir.

GoI also said that the organization is also responsible for ‘propagation of separatist and radical ideology and the organization has nothing to do with Jamaat-e-Islami.

Moreover, Advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmad Ganai on Friday said that there will be no random ban on Jamaat-e-Islami run schools.
