LS Polls: Amid shutdown, clashes, Kulgam records 9.63 percent polling

Srinagar: The second phase of the polling for Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency in district Kulgam on Monday registered a poll percentage of 9.63.

An official said that 9.63 percent voters turned out to vote in the volatile district. Very dull polling was witnessed in major parts of the district throughout the day.

Earlier, clashes erupted between armed forces and youth in Qaimoh area of Kulgam. Reports added that forces deployed in the area swung into action and fired tear smoke shells to quell the protesting youth.

Similar reports came from Bugam area of the district, where people threw stones at Government Higher Secondary School Bugam where five polling has been set up.

Police in a statement said that ‘isolated incidents of stone pelting near polling stations have been reported from various parts of Kulgam district but the situation is under control due to timely action of security forces.’

A complete shutdown was observed in the district. Authorities had suspended mobile Internet services. Train service, from Banihal to Baramulla, which passes through Kulgam district had also been suspended as a precautionary measure.
