The explosives were recovered by the armed forces from a car with fake registration, the forces said

Pulwama: The armed forces on Thursday said that they prevented a massive car bomb attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama  after they stopped a vehicle carrying over 20 kg of improvised explosive device (IED) on Wednesday night.

Based on intelligence inputs, a white Hyundai Santro car with a fake registration number was signalled to stop at a check point on Wednesday night, as per the armed forces.

“The security forces opened fire. The driver managed to escape, leaving behind the car laden with IED,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.

“We got intelligence about a possible attack. We were looking for a vehicle with IED since yesterday,” he added.

Javaid Ahmad, whose house was damaged because of the impact of the explosion, when the bomb was blasted close to his house, says that the forces asked them to evacuate the residence.

“The forces told us to leave and also take our animals. They had found an explosive which they blasted very close to my house,” Javaid says.

The impact of the powerful blast shook the entire village as per the locals.

Javaid says many other houses have been damaged in the impact.

The village transformer too was damaged in the impact, cutting off electricity supply to many houses.

The IED-laden car carried a fake number plate allotted to a motorbike registered in the name of a BSF officer, Sahil Kumar, at regional transport office in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir to mislead the forces, said officers.

The armed forces say that the plan had chilling similarities with last year’s attack in Pulwama, when over 40 soldiers were killed as a suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a CRPF convoy.

The improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected militants was defused by the forces on Thursday, reports said.
