Man booked for raping minor after girl complains of abdomen pain, hospital declares her 8 month pregnant

Srinagar: A 35-year-old man from Shangus area of Anantnag in South Kashmir was arrested on charges of raping and impregnating a minor girl.

The girl complained of abdomen pain, following which the family took her to a Hakeem. Later, she was taken to the hospital where she was declared 8 months pregnant.

The accused has been identified as Showkat Ahmad of Brari Aangan village in Utersoo.

Police has booked the man following a complaint lodged by the minor girl’s family in police station Utersoo. A case (FIR no 40/2020) US 376 420, 506, ¾ (POSCO) has been registered against the accused and further investigations are on, according to the police.

Speaking to Free Press Kashmir, Station House Officer (SHO) Uttersoo Shangas, Anantnaag confirmed the incident saying, “the man has been arrested based on the statement the minor girl gave us. He is in our police station here and as expected, is denying the accusations.”

The SHO said that the police are investigating the case and can take further steps only after matching the DNA of the child and the accused man. “The Child Welfare Committee will be involved in this for the girl’s delivery. After the baby is born, the DNAs will be matched and necessary steps will be taken,” says the SHO.

The preliminary investigations suggest, the accused had raped the girl several times since September last year.

The family of the victim had no clue about the incident or their daughter’s pregnancy.

The family members say that the accused, is also a relative of the girl’s mother, and would visit their house on one pretext or another.
