Kerala elephant accidentally consumed cracker filled fruit, says Environment Ministry

Elephant’s death had sparked hatred againt Muslims after misinformation on the internet blamed the community 

Environment Ministry of India has issued an update on the Kerala Elephant incident saying that the elephant may have accidentally consumed a cracker filled fruit, The Times Of India reported.

The Ministry further said that often times locals illegally plant explosive-filled fruits to repel wild boars from entering plantation farms.

In a series of tweets, the ministry has said that one person has been arrested as well. The Kerala government and all departments concerned of the ministry are handling the matter in an unbiased manner.

On Sunday, the ministry also held a meeting with several officials to discuss the progress in actions to be taken regarding the case. The meeting was chaired by Sanjay Kumar, Director General of Forests and Special Secretary in the ministry (DGF&SS).

Meanwhile, Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Environment, requested the public not to fall prey to social media rumours which have been doing rounds since the incident took place.

The elephant died in Pakkad district of Kerala on May 27, after which rumours and misinformation on the internet sparked off outrage and hatred towards the Muslim community which was wrongly accused of deliberately harming the elephant because ‘Hindus consider the animal sacred’.
