As cities across India open, 9,987 COVID cases recorded in last 24 hours, 266 fatalities reported

India recorded another big spike in Coronavirus with 9,987 cases being reported in last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry data revealed.

The number of Covid-19 deaths in the country has also risen to 7,466 after 266 fatalities were recorded on Monday.

Mumbai became the first city in India to confirm over 50,000 coronavirus cases. As many as 1,311 people tested positive for novel virus in the city in last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus patients in Maharashtra increased to 88,528 today. The state also recorded the highest number of fatalities related to COVID-19, the LiveMint reported.

The easing of India’s lockdown of its 1.3 billion people, which has been in place since 24 March, went ahead as scheduled on Monday.

Malls, restaurants, and religious places were opened for the public across the country and traffic jams were reported at rush hours in metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

Yet experts fear the easing is coming at a worrying time in India’s battle to contain the virus, with 50% of India’s total cases reported in the last two weeks.

“We are very far away from the peak,” said Dr Nivedita Gupta, of the government-run Indian Council of Medical Research. The Guardian reported.

With the total number of Covid-19 cases reaching 2.67 lakh, India is now fifth country in the world with highest number of Coronavirus cases, the John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre data revealed.
