Gaza killings is a ‘repeat of Auschwitz,’ says genocide expert Maung Zarni

Maung Zarni, a renowned human rights activist and expert on genocide, has made striking comparisons between the situation in Gaza and historical atrocities, equating it to “Auschwitz” and a “collective white imperialist man’s genocide.”

Zarni, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year due to his lifelong advocacy for democracy and research on genocides, firmly asserts that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza based on extensive observations spanning decades, Anadolu Agency reported.

He emphasises that genocide entails the destruction of occupied populations, noting the enduring Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories for over 50 years, affecting not just Gaza but also the West Bank with its 3 million Palestinian inhabitants.

Zarni points to a significant development at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where judges considered a case against Israel brought by South Africa for genocide. He highlights the ICJ’s uncharacteristically affirmative response, indicating that the court found the evidence of potential genocide compelling.

The activist compares the ongoing events in Gaza to historical atrocities, describing the systematic destruction of Palestinian communities as akin to mass extermination tactics used during World War II, albeit without gas chambers.

Zarni criticizes Israeli leaders for statements that echo strategies of collective punishment historically associated with places like Auschwitz.

Moreover, Zarni criticises Western countries for their support of Israel, labelling the conflict as a “white man’s genocide” facilitated by substantial military aid primarily from the US, UK, and Germany, amongst others.
