18-year-old from Handwara becomes youngest victim of COVID in JK; total death toll 61

Srinagar: The youngest COVID-19 victim, an 18-year-old boy from Handwara region of district Kupwara died at SMHS hospital on Monday. He was the youngest of all the 61 persons who passed away after testing positive for the virus.

The medical superintendent SMHS hospital, Dr Nazir Choudhary said, “he was admitted on June 12 as a medico-legal case. His swab sample (for the novel coronavirus) was taken next day. He had serious head injuries besides bilateral pneumunia.”

A medico-legal case involves injury or illness that is under investigation by law enforcement agencies to establish and fix the criminal responsibility In accordance with the law.

Till the death of this teenager, the youngest victim of the virus who died was a 27-year-old man hailing from lolab region of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, leading Kupwara’s toll death tally to 5.

With 61 people having succumbed to the virus in J&K, 7 are from Jammu and 54 from the Kashmir valley with Srinagar at the tally of 15 deaths followed by Baramulla with 11, Kulgam with 8, Anantnag with 6, Shopian and Kupwara with 5 each, Pulwama and Budgam with 2 each and 1 each in the districts of Bandipora, Doda, Udampur and Rajouri.

The total number of positive cases for COVID-19 in J&K is 5,041 and the recovered cases tally is 2,389.
