Two workers dead while cleaning well in North Kashmir

Srinagar: Two persons died while cleaning a well in Chalgund village of Hatmat Pora Hyhama in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Thursday.

The dead have been identified as Ghulam Nabi Khan (35) and Ghulam Mohi-udin Ganai (50), by officials. The two went inside the well, located in Ganie Mohalla, to clean it. However, they slipped down.

Soon after the incident, a team of locals, SDRF and police rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them.

A 25-year-old youth, Shariq Ahmad Khan, a local youth fell unconscious during rescue efforts and was taken to nearby SDH hospital, officials said.

The overall rescue operation continued for around two hours, they added.

BMO Kupwara, Dr Zaffar confirmed the death of the two persons. When asked about the reasons for the death of the duo, he said, “it will be revealed by postmortem which is being done.”

A similar incident was witnessed a week ago in which four persons died after a well they were working on, collapsed in Warsun Dardpora, area of Kupwara.

Soon after the incident locals with the help of police team, retrieved them from the well in a state of unconsciousness and shifted to sub-district hospital Kralpora. However, doctors at the hospital declared them brought dead on arrival.

The deceased persons were identified as Showkat Khan son of Ghulam Hassan Khan, Altaf Ahmad Sheikh son of Mahad Sheikh, Mumtaz Ahmad and Altaf Ahmad sons of Ghulam Mohi-ud-din.
