Srinagar: Three days after the first COVID positive was detected from central Jail Anantnag, four more inmates have tested positive for the novel coronavirus today.

A jail official told Free Press Kashmir that they had done tests of hundred inmates two days back- after the first case was detected on July 11, and the tests of the four inmates have returned positive.

He said that more tests were done today and the report will come after two days.

When asked why have not the inmates been shifted to hospitals if the number of positive cases have gone up to five in three days, he said that they have been put in separate cells. “They are being taken care of separately,” he said.

The official added that further decisions would be taken after the test results of the inmates will return from the hospital. He said that the tests of the staff workers have also been done.

Family members of the inmates have expressed resentment about the Jail authorities’ decision for not shifting the inmates to hospitals for the treatment.

On July 11, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat had tested positive for novel Coronavirus, leaving his family worried. Following the news of Bhat’s infection, families of the many inmates lodged at Anantnag jail, have come forward expressing concern over the move for not providing them the proper medical attention.

Including Bhat, many inmates have not been keeping well and had developed a number of complications earlier.

Bhat is a younger brother of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Muhammad Maqbool Bhat who was executed on February 11, 1984, at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
