ICC postpones T20 World Cup due to COVID outbreak

Srinagar: In the wake of COVID pandemic, an official decision has been taken by the International Cricket Council (ICC) under which the Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia has been postponed.

Talking to Delhi based News Organisation Times of India, CEO ICC, Manu Sawhney said, “the decision to postpone the T20 World Cup was taken after careful consideration of all the options available to us and gives us the best possible opportunity of delivering two safe and successful T20 world cups.”

Earlier in May, Cricket Australia had expressed concern that it would be near impossible to stage a closed-door event of this magnitude with quarantine arrangements being made for 16 international teams.

Fro 2021, it has been decided that Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be held in October-November, and the final for the same would be held on November 14.

The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup will be held in India as scheduled, and Australia will be hosting the tournament in 2022.

Postponing the T20 World Cup has cleared the decks for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reschedule the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the same window.
