India reported 48,916 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 13,36,861, the government data shows.

The country also witnessed 757 virus-related deaths during the period, according to the data released by the Health Ministry.

With 31,358 deaths, the fatalities in India is now the sixth-biggest in the world; the country is behind the US, Brazil, Britain, Mexico and Italy.

The recovery rate is 63.53 per cent and positivity rate is 11.62 per cent.

The highest number of samples were tested on Friday, with 4,20,898 samples collected. This is the third consecutive day when COVID-19 cases increased by more than 45,000.

With cases of COVID rising at a fast clip in India, the Central and state governments have implemented a series of steps aimed at curbing the threat.

In wake of the COVID outbreak, recent research published by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), said that at least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on early childhood education in their critical pre-school year due to the COVID closing the childcare and early education facilities.

Earlier on July 21, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) chief Shekhar C Mande asserted that airborne transmission of COVID is indeed a “distinct possibility” and advised people to wear masks even in enclosed spaces.
