After hours of strenuous efforts, local labourer’s body retrieved from Jhelum

Srinagar: Hours after drowning into the river Jhelum while extracting sand in Kernabel Kakapora area of south Kashmir Pulwama, the body of the 20-year-old labourer was fished out on Wednesday afternoon.

Official sources said that labourer identified as Irshad Ahmad Sheikh, son of Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, was extracting sand when he drowned near Sombura bridge.

A number of locals had jumped into the river to save the youth. However, they could only retrieve his body after hours-long strenuous efforts to save his life.

They said, police have taken the body for medico-legal formalities and will be handed over to the family soon for last rites.

Sheikh was among the five labourers who went missing after a boat involved in sand extraction capsized in Karnabal Samboora area of Pulwama district.
