Northern Ireland power-sharing arrangement, a possible solution to Kashmir dispute: HR Minister Pakistan
Srinagar: Offering a possible solution to the long-pending Kashmir dispute, Pakistan has proposed the Northern Ireland power-sharing arrangement as a solution to the Kashmir issue, saying that the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) could bring light at the end of the tunnel.
Quoting the Minister of Human Rights of Pakistan Shireen Mazari, a report published by a Chandigarh based newspaper The Tribune said that Mazari proposed the Northern Ireland model as a possible solution to the long-pending Kashmir dispute.
She was speaking at a webinar organised by Islamabad Policy Institute, a prominent think tank of Pakistan.
Pursuing the model of the GFA in 1998, which brought together all parties to the conflict in Northern Ireland, she proposed that model may turn into the possible solution.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pakistan, was also present in the webinar, but his focus was more on political and military dimensions, the report added.
Pakistan has been insisting on the right to self-determination for Kashmiris as per the United National Resolutions of 1948 and 1949, since long and this was the first time it proposed such solution that earlier turned effective by ending the hostilities between Catholics and Protestants and also drew curtains on the 25-year-long period of troubles.
According to the report, senior separatist leader of Kashmir Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, had also favoured this kind of a solution in 2006 and 2007.
