Srinagar: Panic has gripped the residents along the Line of Control (LoC), in Bagtore block of Gurez in Kashmir’s Bandipora district, after the armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy gunfire.
According to officials, the Pakistan army initiated “unprovoked Ceasefire Violation (CFV) along the Line of control in Bagtore Sector by firing mortar shells and targeting forward defence posts at Bagtore sector”.
To this, the Indian army is “retaliating strongly” and shelling from both sides is going on.
Locals said that the exchange of fire triggered panic among the villagers and some of them have even shifted to safer places.
Speaking to Free Press Kashmir, the Sarpanch of the Talbal villages in Gurez, Ghulam Mohiuddin said that residents have moved inside bunkers for now. “The firing started at 10:30 am and is still going on,” he said.
Mohiuddin added that as of now there was no loss of life and any reports of property damage.
Pertinently, cross border shelling between the two armies was reported twice in the last four days in Gurez sector.
Earlier on Tuesday, Indian army claimed recovery of arms and ammunition during a “counter-infiltration operation” in Budhab area of the same sector.
