Amid countrywide agitation over controversial Farm Bills, farmers’ body announces all-India protests from October 2

New Delhi: Amid the country agitation over controversial Farm Bills passed by the parliament of India last week, All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) has announced its plans to hold All-India farmers’ protests from October 2, News18 reported.

On Monday, large-scale protests were held in several states of India including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana, Gujarat, Goa, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, where the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies, including the Congress, hit the streets.

The furious protestors said to be Congress youth wing activists also set a tractor ablaze near India Gate. The grand old party has also planned to observe October 2 as ‘Kisan-Majdoor Bachao Diwas’ and hold dharnas across India. DMK chief M K Stalin said his party was ready to challenge the new laws in court.

Meanwhile, thousands of the farmers belonging to the BJP-ruled Karnataka state of India along with pro-farmer organisations backed by a number social and political outfits joined the protests in Bengaluru city on Tuesday.

Besides other laws, the protestors were specifically agitating against changes to the land acquisition act — which makes it easier for non-farmers to buy agricultural land — and amendments to the APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committees) Act, which lists rules for procuring farm produce.

Reports said that former Congress president Rahul Gandhi is likely to lead a farmers’ protest in Punjab this week. The Congress leader is also expected to address a rally; however, the date and venue of which is being finalised.
