Twitter locates Leh as ‘Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China’

Leh: Twitter on Sunday located Jammu and Kashmir as part of Peoples Republic of China.

Senior defence journalist of India Nitin Gokhale in a tweet said that when he started his live broadcast from Leh, twitter showed the location as “Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China”.

Gokhale also said that he had re-tried the said feature thinking that it might be an error; however, it was still showing the location as “Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China”.

He said that one of his friends along with him checked on his phone and the results were the same.

Later, the tweet was widely shared and users slammed the Twitter India for showing the “wrong” location.

The issue was also shared by an Indian Journalist Kanchan Gupta and termed it a violation of Indian laws.

“So @Twitter has decided to reconfigure geography and declare Jammu & Kashmir as part of People’s Republic of #China . If this is not a violation of #India laws, what is? Citizens of India have been punished for far less. But US Big Tech is above the law?”, Gupta wrote tagging Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

“No @Twitter this is not a freak happenstance,” Gupta said in another tweet.
