Religious cleric Mushtaq Veeri released from prison after more than one-and-a-half-year

Srinagar: A prominent religious cleric and Vice President of Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadees, Moulana Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri was on Saturday released from detention.

Reports said that Veeri reached home and was welcomed by locals and relatives today.

Veeri was arrested on February 24, 2019, following a crackdown on Kashmir’s largest socio-religious organisation Jama’at-e-Islami.

He was later booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) and was shifted to Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu.

On October 28, authorities released pro-freedom activist Sarjan Barkati, who was arrested for taking part in protests during 2016 mass agitation after the killing of Hizb Commander Burhan Wani.

Barkati who earned sobriquets like ‘Azaadi Chacha’ and ‘Pied Piper’, was arrested by police in 2016 and booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA).
