Sarjan Barkati released from prison after 4 years, says family

Srinagar: Pro-freedom activist Sarjan Barkati, who was arrested for taking part in protests during 2016 mass agitation after the killing of Hizb Commander Burhan Wani, has been released from prison.

“He has not reached home yet but yes, he has been freed from police station Hurpora Shopian and is on way home,” news agency KNT quoted Barkati’s wife Sabroz as saying.

Barkati who earned sobriquets like ‘Azaadi Chacha’ and ‘Pied Piper’, was arrested by police in 2016 and booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA).

Family and relatives were demanding his release and held demonstrations at Srinagar’s press colony seeking his release.

Barkati was arrested on charges of organizing and addressing “anti-India rallies” in different parts of the valley.
