Muslim-American Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar win re-election to House of Representatives

Muslim-American Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar have won re-election to the US House of Representatives and both lawmakers are set to get a majority in their respective constituencies in Michigan and Minnesota as well.

Known for their progressive stance, especially on Palestine and Kashmir, the duo became the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress in 2018 as well as in August this year, after having overcome the challenge for the second term.

As the two Congresswomen were declared victorious, supportive groups took to social media to post congratulatory messages.

In a message by Justice Democrats groups, Omar was dubbed as a ‘Beacon of Hope’.

For Tlaib, a Jewish progress group said that they would ‘continue supporting her fight for Palestinian freedom and against anti-semitism’.

According to a report in the Middle East Eye, Omar sent an email to her supporters late on Tuesday saying the victory was an “affirmation” of her agenda of centring marginalised people in politics.

US President Doland Trump has frequently attacked them for their criticism of US support to Israel’s anti-Palestine policy.

Tlaib told Middle East Eye last week that she would continue her advocacy for rights of the Palestinian people.
