COVID Patient at CD Hospital accuses doctor of assault, harassment over toilet facility

Srinagar: An immuno-compromised COVID patient at the Chest Disease (CD) Hospital has filed a written complaint in the Rambagh police station after she was allegedly ‘physically assaulted’ and denied the washroom facility by the resident doctor.

A 50-year-old female (name withheld) was admitted in the CD Hospital on Saturday morning after she was diagnosed with COVID.

The patient who was on oxygen concentrator said that the COVID ward which has around 35 patients has “only one common washroom facility and which was cut off from the electricity supply and it was not usable”.

She said that the condition of the washroom was so unhygienic, that urine was overflowing and it was spread everywhere on the floor and the room was dark with no electricity.

“There is another washroom adjacent to the patient’s washroom which is used by the doctors. Due to the lack of electricity supply in the patient’s washroom for the last three days, patients were using the doctor’s washroom. But on Monday at 8 in the evening when my wife was going to the washroom she just saw the bathroom was locked by the RMO, Dr Nighat,” the patient’s husband told Free Press Kashmir.

The patients approached the concerned doctor for the keys to use the washroom but she denied giving the keys and also assaulted the patient, as per the family.

“Dr Nighat told my wife that the washroom is not for their use, ‘it is not your property, get out of my way’ and also pushed the patient to the floor. She also told her to wait till the electrician comes to fix the issue in the patient’s washroom.”

“My wife was on oxygen concentrator, how could she wait for such a long time without oxygen supply?” he asked.

“I was present there and I tried to pacify the situation on both sides but the doctor held me by my collar and used abusive language. And within no time the doctor screamed that she was assaulted. She also filed FIR also due to which we have been denied a visit to our patient.”

The family has now registered a complaint against the doctor in Rambagh police station that the doctor has physically assaulted the patient and used abusive language.

“We want the police and hospital administration to check the CCTV footage and get the facts. The hospital administration has not shown the footage to the police,” the patient’s husband rued.

However, the Dr Nighat told Free Press Kashmir that the patient manhandled her by choking her neck with hands.

“First I thought she was the attendant but later I came to know that she is the COVID positive patient. The woman held my neck with her hands and choked my breath. I don’t know how I am alive. People around there helped to set me free,” Dr Nighat accused.

She has also registered a complaint in the concerned police station against the patient and the attendant and accused them of assault.

Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent, CD Hospital Dr Saleem Tak said that the hospital admin is investigating the matter and “everything will be sought in a proper manner”.

“The patient can keep one attendant with her, we have not disallowed anyone,” Tak added.
