NC workers hit streets in support of Abdullah

Police says situation normal, people shouldn’t pay heed to rumours

Jammu: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing on Wednesday staged a protest outside the residence of Dr. Farooq Abdullah in Jammu’s Bathindi locality. However, police detained BJYMs Jammu and Kashmir chief during the protest.

Official sources said that on Wednesday afternoon, scores of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers headed by its J&K President Arun Dev Singh reached residence of Farooq Abdullah in Bathndi area of Jammu during which they raised slogans against Dr. Abdullah as his name allegedly surfaced in Roshni scam.

A heavy deployment of police rushed to the spot, they said.

“The protest by BJYM workers resulted in strong objection by both local youth of Bhatindi as well as NC cadre who also hit the streets and started to raise slogans in favour of Dr. Farooq Abdullah and against BJP,” the official sources said.

“There was almost a situation of faceoff between both the sides when police intervened and managed to avert the possible situation of faceoff,” the official sources further said, adding that prompt action by police on the spot prevented the situation from taking ugly turn.

“BJYMs Jammu and Kashmir president, Arun Dev Singh was detained from the spot and was taken to a local Police Station besides some other workers,” the official sources said.

They informed that later NC cadre and locals from the area sat on dharna and raised serious objections to the unwanted protest by BJYM workers.

“The residence of Dr. Farooq is here for decades and why only today during DDC polls this issue has been raised,” the protesting locals said. They further said that there are hundreds of beneficiaries of Roshni Act across Jammu why only Bhatindi area and residence of Dr. Farooq is being selectively targeted.

“These people are trying to fuel trouble and tension in Jammu and are making issues,” the locals while protesting said adding that people from the locality have been harassed.

Later, senior police officers pacified the protesters. Meanwhile, in an official statement, Jammu police said that in view of security situation at Bhatindi, a special meeting has been convened by DIG Jammu, SSP Jammu and other field officers.

“Detailed interaction with the inhabitants of the area of Bhatindi has been done,” police said. It said that the grievances of all the prominent citizens of the area were listened to and all the issues were addressed on the spot.

“The situation is normal in the area. People are requested not to believe in rumours and manipulations of vested interests,” police further said.
