‘Calls for his and other prisoners release in view of Ramadan’
Srinagar: All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) on Monday said that its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq completed 20 months in house detention. Mirwaiz was put under house arrest on 4th August 2019.
APHC in a statement issued said: “We have been repeatedly demanding the release of our chairman who is arbitrarily detained at his home, his basic human and civil rights and liberties being suspended by the state.”
As the holy month of Ramadan draws near, APHC asked the authorities to release Mirwaiz and all other political prisoners who according to them are arbitrarily detained in various jails and detention centres across JK and in various states of the country.
They said, “As is the centuries-old tradition, its chairman being the Mirwaiz of JK has religious obligations to be fulfilled, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. So until he is released from home detention he cannot carry them out.”
APHC urged the authorities to release him and all other prisoners without delay and allow the people of Kashmir to observe the holy month of Ramadan with their loved ones and without creating what they call obstacles and hurting the sentiments of Muslims by keeping Mirwaiz under detention.
