Wearing face masks compulsory in vehicles, even when travelling alone: Delhi HC
New Delhi: Upholding the Delhi government’s decision of making it compulsory to wear masks in a personal or official vehicle even while travelling alone, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday said that a vehicle that is moving across the city would be a public place.
“A vehicle even if occupied by one person would constitute a public place and wearing a mask therein would be compulsory. The wearing of a mask or a face cover in a vehicle which may be occupied by either a single person or multiple persons is thus held to be compulsory,” said the court.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, India reported 1,15,736 new cases of the novel coronavirus, the highest daily increase so far. Nearly 55,000 cases were detected in Maharashtra, while Chhattisgarh scaled a new peak of 9,921 cases. Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi reported more than 5,000 cases each.
Of India’s total COVID caseload (1,28,01,785), there are now 8,43,473 active cases. At least 630 deaths were reported on Tuesday, taking the toll to 1,66,177. About a half of these were from Maharashtra. Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka were the other states which reported a large number of deaths.
The government of India on Tuesday said India’s COVID cases were “spreading faster than last time”, and the next four weeks would be “critical” in controlling the second wave of the disease.
Amid the surge in infections, Delhi has imposed a night curfew, from 10 pm to 5 am, till April 30; Pune is facing an acute shortage of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and ventilators; and active cases in the Mumbai Police force has more than doubled in the last fortnight, rising from 155 on March 22 to 408 till Monday night.
