Srinagar: Every time the bell rings on the door of Mohammad Asif Bhat (name changed) his heart beats fast as he thinks of his 22-year-old daughter who was arrested on Sunday evening.

“Whoever opens the door, I always enquire about my daughter if it is her but every time my hope turns into disappointment when my family says that it was someone else on the door,” recounted Bhat.

“My daughter is education oriented and has nothing to do with any militancy incident. She has secured good percentage in class 12th exams and was selected for nursing training in Chadora. She has to appear in examination on April 13 and was preparing for it. She has a very clear goal in her life and will never indulge in such activities,” Bhat said.

On Monday, Jammu and Kashmir police had arrested two women from Bungam village of Nowgam’s Budgam district in connection with a militant attack on BJP leader, Anwar Khan in which a policeman was killed.

The women continue to be behind bars for the last five days.

However, the families of the duo say that both the girls are innocent and have nothing to do with the militant attack.

A few houses away from Bhat’s house, Abid Maqbool, brother of another woman had received a call from Nowgam Police Station on Sunday afternoon, asking him to bring his younger sister to the police station for investigation purposes.

“When I reached the police station, they took my sister and said they have to question her in connection with some case. They told me to return home. I thought they will release my sister in the evening but I was not aware that they will arrest my sister and keep her in custody,” Abid recalled.

After Abid went to the police station with his sister, two police officers in civil clothes visited Bhat’s house and said that their elder daughter has to visit police station for some verification.

“They told me to accompany her to the police station. I accompanied her and returned home. Abid’s sister resides few meters away from our home. I was not even aware of her arrest. I thought my daughter will come home in the evening but five days have passed she has not returned home yet. Police do not allow us to meet our daughters. She has to appear in exams on April 13. Her life will be ruined,” lamented Bhat.

According to both the families, they came to know that their daughters have been arrested in connection with a militant attack via the internet.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, Tahir Saleem Khan did not respond to repeated journalistic requests from Free Press Kashmir.

Earlier, media reports quoting police said that the two women were arrested by police station Nowgam in connection with a case FIR number 27/2021 under sections 307, 302, 392 of IPC and 7/27 of Arms Act, which was registered in connection with the attack on Bhartiya Janta Party leader, Anwar Khan.
