Srinagar: A young Kashmiri man has created an offline app to help the Muslim population of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Kargil by providing Iftaar and Sehri timings.

Founded during the long Internet shutdown in 2020, the Iftar App, ‘Iftarkar’ has a 4.7 rating on Google Play Store. The app is in three languages, Kashmiri, Urdu and English and works without an internet connection.

The app has been built by Haider Ali Punjabi who has founded his start-up company called Hackesta. Punjabi found an opportunity to create a smart app that works offline during Ramadan in Kashmir.

“There is a lack of Ramadan specific apps and the absence of countdown timers which are common in many Muslim countries, so we felt the need to fill the void and that’s how IftarKar was born,” Punjabi says about how he started the app.

IftarKar which in Kashmiri means, “When is Iftar?” had clocked over 100,000 views during the last year’s Ramadan. It has both Iftar and Sehri countdown timers which alert the users on the time left for Iftar.

The website and the app are also filled with daily reminders and prayers and has garnered a loyal following since. Owing to its unique interface and following, it has started an Instagram account that will not only post Islamic reminders but also productivity tips for those who are following Ramadan.

Haider Ali Punjabi’s Hackesta has been working on many other initiatives and is a rising name in Kashmir’s software programming community. “IftarKar is only the beginning,” he says.
