Student sustains eardrum injury during ragging in Kashmir Law College, authorities say cognizance taken

Srinagar: Chaos was seen at Kashmir Law College at Nowshera in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Thursday after some students claimed ‘ragging’ from seniors students in the college premises.

Sources said that there was some dispute of ‘ragging’ going on between third semester and eighth-semester students, and suddenly on Thursday the scene turned into a fight in the premises of college and started beating each other on the college campus.

According to sources, there was a minor injury also reported before the police party from the concerned area reached the spot.

While talking to this news agency, a 3rd-semester student of the college said that he was thrashed by 8th-semester students to such an extent that his eardrum suffered a fracture.

Another student wishing anonymity said: “They have been depicting seniority since we took admission in our first semester. Since then we are facing abuses and harassment from these goons”.

“One of our classmates attempted suicide because of the everyday harassment she had to bear and witness”, the student added.

Another student said: “We are here for studies not for chaos, but these ill-mannered seniors have halted our educational process, we feel insecure and pressurized”.

“Our fellow girl students are being threatened, again and again, they (seniors) are glorifying an acid attack of the past to traumatize them”, he added.

The situation in the said college has turned so grim that these students don’t know whether to focus on studies or save their lives instead, the students lamented.

“Even teachers don’t listen to us; they didn’t allow us inside the campus when we told them we’ll highlight the issue in the media. They don’t want their college to be defamed by any means”, one of the students added.

The students demanded strict action from the authorities and requested Lt. Governor to intervene in this matter. They also demanded the rustication of all these students involved in these ‘inhuman acts’.

The Principal of Law College in a notice has said that there will be no classwork in the college on the 16th of April 2021 and Saturday respectively.

Another notice issued by the college has claimed that the college has taken cognizance of the matter and has constituted a disciplinary committee to look into it. (KDC)
