As Israel continues to hold brutal airstrikes on Palestinians killing more than 200 people so far, an official Twitter account for the State of Israel in Arabic has posted a Quranic verse of Surah al-Fīl, in which the destruction of Abrahah’s army is described. The tweet also contains a picture of Israel bombing Gaza.
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ * أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ * وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ * تَرْمِيهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍ مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ (سورة الفيل 1-4، القرآن الكريم) pic.twitter.com/7Rv2JOfq7c

The verse tweeted in Arabic translates into English as: “Have you not seen how your Lord did to the companions of the elephants? Did He not make their plan into misguidance? And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay.”
Here, the verse refers to a Quranic event that happened in the year of the birth of Prophet Muhammad when Allah protected the Ka’aba against the attack of the army of pagans who, riding on the backs of elephants, came from Yemen intending to destroy it.
This surah recounts a blessing given to the Quraysh by Allah as He favored them and defended them from the army of Abrahah. As per the Quran, Allah destroyed the Abrahah’s army and preserved the Ka’abah.
Quran mentions that Allah sent birds, each of which was carrying three small stones with their feet and their beaks. They gathered in rows over the heads of the army and then threw the stones onto the army below them. The stones were increased in force by a strong wind sent by Allah, piercing the bodies of the men below and they were destroyed piece by piece. None of the men returned to their land without injury and Abrahah died when he reached Sana’a after telling the story of the battle.
All that remained after the battle were the remnants of the annihilation of an army that intended to destroy the Ka’abah.
Pertinently, the violence in Gaza has intensified in the past eight days and is showing no signs of abating. The death toll in Gaza has crossed 200 including 61 children and 36 women.
More than 52,000 Palestinians have been displaced by Israeli airstrikes that have destroyed or badly damaged nearly 450 buildings in the Gaza Strip, the UN aid agency said on Tuesday.
In a separate statement on the conflict, rights group Amnesty International said Israel airstrikes on residential buildings might amount to war crimes. Israel says it hits only legitimate military targets and that it does all it can to avoid civilian casualties.
About 47,000 of the displaced people have sought shelter in 58 UN-run schools in Gaza, Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva, announced.
Laerke said 132 buildings had been destroyed and 316 had been severely damaged, including six hospitals and nine primary healthcare centers as well as desalination plants, affecting access to drinking water for about 250,000 people.
