3 arrested for assaulting Muslim man in UP get bail in 24 hours

Kanpur: Three people who were put in custody for parading a Muslim man, assaulting him, and forcing him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, have been granted bail less than 24 hours after their arrest.

On Thursday, visuals had emerged of the man being paraded through the streets of Kanpur amid chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, with his young daughter clinging to him and crying desperately for her father’s safety.

The three accused released on bail have been identified as Ajay Rajesh, Aman Gupta, and Rahul Kumar, The Quint reported.

The sections of the law applied against the accused carry less than seven years of punishment.

“We have made three arrests, they are the main accused in the case. We are also trying to make more arrests in the case. Adequate forces have been deployed in the area and we will take every legal step to punish these people,” NTDV quoted Asim Arun, Police Commissioner, Kanpur as saying.

After the accused were apprehended, the Bajrang Dal had collected in protest outside the police station in Kanpur.

According to the report, the Dal left the site after they received affirmation of a fair probe by the police, asserting that they would return if the men were not released from custody soon.

The report said Krishna, a Bajrang Dal leader had told the media last night that the “workers of the Bajrang Dal got together and we gheraoed the SP and told them we will not leave till our worker is released”.

“We have spoken to senior police officials who have told us the worker would be released soon and a speedy investigation would take place,” he was quoted further saying.

In a statement, the Kanpur police said they have filed a case of rioting against a local who runs a marriage band, his son, and around 10 unknown people, based on a complaint by the assaulted man.

The police have not said if the men named in the case are affiliated with the organization.
